Here is some stuff from a thread I posted on HCA:
ALHC:
They have put more stuff like videos on the site.It looks SO HORRIBLE! I'd hate to be one of those crabs!
www.crabrace.com/
I just e-mailed them. This time the e-mail was friendlier.
EDIT: Also, is says on the about us page that they train them! Shocked Also, I think that crab racing has to do with FMR! Shocked
They ALSO added a crappy song! Shocked
This is the reply I just got:

I've lived with hermit crabs (hundreds at a time), seven days a week, 24 hours a day for 27 years. These crabs live at five star resorts most of the time. I guess you feel that the crabs are better off in the mud flats; where they are food for birds and other scavengers.
I wish people like yourself would do a little research before you take on a cause. I believe the lobsters need a little help.
I realize that there are a lot of people out in the world that do
not take care of the crabs but I can't do anything about that.
Most people do not live as good as my hermit crabs.
Sincerely
Jim Morgan / NCRA

That's not exactly what I was suggesting. They just need better care. Go to www.crabstreetjournal.com and you'll see a lot of care information. Here are some facts that you might be missing:
-They need humidity between 75 and 80% relative. They have gills, and if they dry out, they can suffocate.
-Their temperature has to be between 70 and 80 F because they are cold-blooded.
- They can't be crowded, because they can die of stress that way.

You're not exactly getting my side either. I'm probably more knowledgable
about the care of hermit crabs than any of the sites you reccommend. Florida
Marine Research; who I have worked with over the past 27
years; is the best source of care materials in the world.
This is where most of those new sites get their information.
But there again you don't look at the plite of the lobsters
that get dropped into boiling water.
By the way ; how old are you? Probably not very old....
Good luck in your quests
NCR
I didn't reply yet, and am wondering how I should reply. *sigh* This guy doesn't seem to nice...
Maybe I shouldn't be doing this kind of stuff and let the older people do it...
Does the stuff I said sound attacking to any of you? Confused And how would you stop people from eating lobsters when millions of people across the world eat them? It's not like I consider eating one any tiime soon! Ugh...
jgaff78:
I think this person just doesn't want to listen. You can tell from the pictures in their gallery that they do not care about the crabs. They are all in painted shells! And since he's blindly stating that FMR is so great, then I wonder how he would respond to the fact that FMR adds preservatives to their food that is harmful to the crabs over time.
I might e-mail this Jim as well and ask him a few questions myself. I am curious about how the crabs are "trained" Confused
elephantshark44:
if this person knew anything proper about crab care, they would not be putting them under the stress of racing them, and i'm sure the "race track" doesn't have good conditions such as humidity and temp for them. you ought to email them about the ingredients in fmr food and how the ingredients can affect the crabs and such. or, email them a detailed crab care sheet. and you should tell them their sarcastic attitude and snide comments towards your interest in their crabs welfare (whch is obviously justified) is disgustinly childish and ask them what their age is. and tell them they shouldn't discriminate based on age in regards to how to properly care for hermit crabs and then ask to speak to their supervisor.
i deal with this junk a lot in running 2 businesses, and i usually end up getting a lot of people in trouble over their disrespectful responses to simple questions and comments.

It's terrible that you won't at least LOOK at them.
Since you won't look at them, here is a care sheet from http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com:
------------------------------------------------
Coenobita clypeatus (purple pincer) care sheet:
ID Characteristics:
Multi-colored limbs in shades of red, purple, tan, orange, and yellow. The body is a shade of tan. The pincers are susally purple, but can also be a variety of other colors (reds, purples, tans, oranges, yellows). The eyes are comma shaped and the eyestalks are slender and narrow.
Housing/Crabitat:
no smaller than a 10 gallon glass tank, is preferable. A glass or plexiglass lid is also preferable, to keep proper temperature and humidity.
Temperature: 74-78 degrees F
Humidity: 70-80% relative
Substrate:
Playsand, Forestbedding (Eco-Earth, Bed-a-Beast, etc). Moss and calcisand may also be added to the tank, however it is not recommended as a main substrate.
Diet:
Vegetables (favorites include-carrots, lettuce, parsley, spinach, and corn), Fruits (favorites include-coconut, mango, apples, grapes, and pears), Meats (seafood, silversides and chicken are favorites), Grains, Peanut butter, eggs, seeds, algae and seaveggies. Please see www.epicureanhermit.com for a list of other edible foods.
Purple pinchers need both fresh and salt water (dechlorinated).
Shells:
Turbo, pica/magpie, Sharks eye. Shells with circular openings are favorites
Molting:
-Lethargic before and hyper after molting
-Legs tend to be dry and ashy pre-molt
-Will sometimes molt without a molt sac or other pre-molting symptoms
-Are thirsty and hungry pre-molt and post-molt
Other Characteristics:
-Sweet/nice temperament
-Love to climb
-Love to crowd into piles
-Not as active as other species such as the Es
-Like to hide during the day and are most active at night
-More willing to pinch if they feel threatened/scared
-Females seem to have larger eyes than males
-Love to change shells
-Love to eat and climb on wood such as cholla/choya and corkbark
--------------------------------------
FMR puts terrible perservatives in their hermit crab food that hurt them over time.
How are they "trained".
Also, FMR is wrong about hermit crab care. I doubt that ANY of the websites I mentioned are based on it.
Racing them gives them a lot of stress. They can die easily of stress. Also, the "racetrack" doesn't provide enough humidity or temperature.
If you DO want to look at the care at the sites now, here are the links:

EGcrabber:
It seems this guy tries to make his races seem really great, with all the music and happy pictures of people who win. What he doesn't show is how the crabs are being treated. Most people who attend the races probably don't know anything about crab care and are tricked into thinking that he's a good crab owner and the crabs are happy. Hopefully he'll listen to your last post.
elephantshark44:
ok, what is this guys email address? i think more people need to talk to him since he has chosen to act like a smart mouth child.
JJ:
Wow, you are alot nicer to him than I would have been. I have little tolerance for people who believe they know everything. What a disgusting thing ignorance- and worse yet, arrogant ignorance- can be. Well, I'm sure that chewing him a new one probably wouldn't help, but it sure would feel good, wouldn't it? Tank!

If you go to their website, go to their contact us page or whatever it says, and it'll have a form that you will be able to send him.
ALHC:
Oh, dear. I just got a reply!
Here is what it says:
Quote:
Angela - Please do your self a favor and get a LIFE!!!!
These people and web sites that you seem to believe in
are just people who just want a cause but do no research.
What makes you think they are so right ? Do they have
degrees in crabology ?
What an idiot!
My reply:

Actually, I think they do WONDERFUL research. Hermit crabs have gills, so that is why they think that they need humidity that is between 70 and 80 %. They are also cold-blooded, so they think that they need warmer temperatures, so they don't get lethargic AND DIE! You people at FMR are the ones who don't do the research! You are the people who put HARMFUL preservatives in hermit crab food! Yet you people say that the people who made those sites don't do enough research. You should AT LEAST look at the sites before coming to a conclusion like that!
EDIT: I'm DEFINATELY putting this on my site!
jgaff78:
It's interesting that you're getting so many replies because I e-mailed him and have yet to hear anything back. Perhaps his mommy will only allow him to respond to one person a week?
The only decent thing I did see is that this business seems like it is largely based in Florida. The outside temp and humdity might at least keep the crabs somewhat healthy, though I doubt that the bars and "five star resorts" he takes them to are the same temp and humidity as it is outside.
How sad it is that he is so close-minded . . .
chicofeo1993:
I emailed him and he told me the same thing:
to get a life.
at least i dont spend my life racing poor little crabs. Sad
crabber:
ALHC, I'm glad you haven't let this guy make you feel you shouldn't take on these causes because of your age. You have been behaving much more adult than he has been! You express yourself very well!
I'm sending him an email, I would love to be wrong, but I'm thinking soon he won't be responding to any of us.
You'll find in life, the best defense is a good offense and that people VERY often accuse others of the very thing that they are doing in order to make people feel they wouldn't have any credibility in calling them out on their faults. It's pretty obvious that he's the one who's done no research and is behaving immaturely.
I'm glad to see your not one to back down from your convictions, character speaks louder than someone's chronological age.
