Malls need to stop selling hermit crabs. They do not know how to take care of them at all. They put WAY too much crabs in one cage or whatever ou want to call it, because it isn't no tank! They need to stop now! They are hurting too many hermit crabs.
Some experiences people have had with crabs being sold in malls:
me:
one time, while i was in the mall, i saw this crab island place. i took a look at it, and this crab was in this TINY shell! And there weren't ANY shells for it in ther! petsmart was better than this place! It was actually StUCK in the shell! The poor thing could barely move! I REALLY wanted to rescue it, but they were WAY too much money. They were $8! I would be giving them A LOT of profit if i did. There wasn't even a lid over it! Any little kid could pick one up and drop it! It was HORRIBLE! There wasn't even any food or water in it, I dont think! there were about 60-100 of them in this thing that would be a less than 10 gallon if it was an aquarium. I almost cried. I even didnt eat that much how sad it was! I wish I could've helped. I hope we make a difference. A BIG difference!

"i recently took a visit to a mall in Erie,PA the milcreek mall and visit the heartland pet shop, unfortunately they dont have a heart for most of their pets, poor conditions for most special pets such as teranchilas (spelling?) and especially their hermies. i saw al least 4 or 5 dead ones, and the cage looked as thought it had not been tended to extensively for at least a week or 2 the food was full of pebbles and not much food was left and they had a 2-3 inch water dish (deep) and had a huge sponge that was mostly dry from the lack of water exept on the bottom so hermies that were too small would not get ne water at all because of the dry top maybe a cm of water left in bottom, i couldnt get a caresheet to them because i only go to this mall about 2-3 times a year because it is 1 1/2 hours away from where i live and i cant drive yet...they had no guages and it looked like alot of over heating becuase of the heat lamp and no water (also no salt water) if anyone lives by this said mall in Erie, PA milcreek mall visit this pet shop nand take imediate action! the only good thing about this shop is they have okay hermit crab supplies but they obviously dont use it themselves and i got choya wood that my local shop doesnt carry from them (yay...) i told the manager about the dead hermies and poor conditions and he said he would have some one check it but how could they improve if they already were doing so much wrong..and what ppl say and do are usuallly 2 different things...
plz HELP!! asap! "

This has to stop or get improved a great deal.
2.At first I thought it was bad enough when I saw a kiosk with dozens of mistreated hermies. When it had looked like the little kiosk had gone out of business,I was so relieved.A few months later,a pet store opened up at the very same mall, and I was horrified to see the conditions the crabs were in.They were in a dry tank with no lid and a bright light beaming down on them. They had about a millimeter of calci-sand as substrate. There were limbs EVERYWHERE,and it was just heart-breaking.:(Sure,the tank wasn't overcrowded, but that was probably only because most of the crabs had died already! I was thinking,"This place is like a long term kiosk!"It's just so sad....

Ridiculous, they over-charge than the hermit crabs die when you get them home from PPS

I agree, these places are slow torture to the gentle crabs. People picking them up just to see if they can get the crabs to pinch, poor conditions, rarely any food, water, or places to hide. These people help encourage the "disposable pet" theory.

How is everyone? I'm not sure anyone will remember me, but I found my way back here, looking for the care list. Long story to follow:
It all started when I went to a major mall about half an hour away, Great Lakes Crossing. My mom and I went up there to go to the Sanrio store they have because my niece's birthday party is being held (on my birthday, actually) Sunday and she's very in to Hello Kitty.
On the way out of the mall, we peeked in to this store, kind of a New-Age-y place, and I was horrified. At least 150 hermies occupying space the size of a desk. Some of them are huge, the size of my fist. That's not even the worst part: Their enclosure has very little sand, no food, a 1/8 inch of dirty water and it's not even covered. I was terribly upset. Especially about the jumbos.
